Forest Genetics Ontario
Forest Genetics Ontario (FGO) is a not-for-profit association incorporated under the laws of the Province of Ontario.
Forest Genetics Ontario is a forest stakeholder cooperative which promotes, advocates for, and carries out genetic conservation, genetic resource management, research, and technology transfer and information-sharing activities. We do this by collaborating with the forest industry, government, scientific and conservation communities, and others.
We carry out our work through three regional associations:
- Superior-Woods Tree Improvement Association (SWTIA), based in Thunder Bay
- Northeast Seed Management Association (NESMA), located in Englehart
- Forest Gene Conservation Association (FGCA), with offices in Peterborough
FGO's activities include:
- Selective tree breeding to produce better seed and seedlings for Ontario's production forests
- Seed zones work to aid in ecological restoration efforts and ensure forest health
- Publications about tree breeding and genecology, to help foresters and conservationists do their work well
- Partnering in research on issues such as conserving genetic diversity, adaptation, and recovery of endangered and threatened tree species
